Indiana Death Registration System Physician Requirements
A recent scenario at one of IU Health’s hospitals resulted in a deep dive review of internal policies and processes, as well as external requirements with the Indiana Death Registration System (IDRS).
Indiana statute (IC-16-18-2-282.2) states that the person pronouncing is considered the “last attending” and shall sign the death certificate. It has been identified that many physicians are not registered on the Indiana Death Registration System (IDRS). By statute this has been a requirement since December 31, 2010. Failure of the physician to comply with registration constitutes a class “B” misdemeanor which could result in 180 days in jail and a $1000 fine for each occurrence. A physician must be registered within this system in order to sign a death certificate and this is to be completed within 72 hours after death or death investigation.
Due to the recent event, the deep dive uncovered that there are legal actions that could be taken on clinicians by not complying with the above statute. IU Health is performing their due diligence to ensure that all clinicians are aware of this legal requirement. There are no actions to be taken, this is a simple notification for all clinicians at IU Health.
Clinicians can access the following website to verify if they are listed as a registered user in IDRS: https://idrsthin.isdh.in.gov
