Announcements

CMO Updates

Unfortunately, we have already 11 CLABSIs this year. We need your help to break this trend. Here are a few things you can do to prevent CLABSI.

1.     Assess the need for a central line daily and remove the ones that aren’t needed. Also, if a patient has a port that is accessed, please assess the need for de-accessing ports when applicable. We continue to see issues in both port access and central line utilization.

2.     Reinforce with your patients the importance of CHG bathing. We have had an uptick in patients refusing CHG bathing. This is one of the ways we can prevent CLABSI. Please help patients understand the need to do CHG bathing daily.

On another note, we are doing very well with the mortality index. Thank you for taking time to have goals of care conversations with patients and refer patients to hospice as well as the work you have done with the inpatient sepsis alert. We are on target in these areas thanks to all of you.

I’m looking forward to celebrating Doctors’ Day with all of you. While the official holiday falls on Saturday, March 30, we’ll celebrate with treats on Thursday, March 28. Look for more details on Doctors’ Day festivities in my next CMO Update.

Here are a few important updates for you:

Reminder: Support the IU Health Medical Center with your U.S. News and World Report vote today

U.S. News & World Report has opened the Best Hospitals expert opinion survey, and voting will be open through the end of March. Please vote as soon as possible, it only takes minutes to do. Eligible physicians can sign into their Doximity accounts to complete the annual survey and provide their expert opinion on the Best Hospitals across the nation. Here is how you can ensure your vote is counted:

1. Log in: Look for an email from Doximity that contains a U.S. News survey link. You can also navigate directly to Doximity.com, sign into your Doximity account and click the U.S. News “submit your nominations” notification on the homepage.

2. Place your vote: To nominate IU Health Methodist and University hospitals, enter IU Health Medical Center. Make sure you complete and submit the survey before exiting.

Your support in nominating the IU Health Medical Center helps the U.S. News and World Report rankings. Our innovative accomplishments have benefited each of our physicians, providers, team members, and most especially our patients as we strive to achieve more together.

Accessibility improvements to patient portal

IU Health is taking steps to improve patients access to their records and increase the clinical note types being automatically released to the patient portal as we are required to do so as part of the 21st Century Cures Act. Starting Tuesday, March 12, IU Health’s patient portal will include additional inpatient clinical notes. Prior to this, these notes were available upon request from health information management (HIM).

ERAdvisor has launched at IU Health

ERAdvisor is a patient experience application that walks patients through their ED visit–no download or username required. Patients use ERAdvisor from their smartphone and are automatically invited to the application upon quick registration.

With ERAdvisor, IU Health patients can:

  • Stay updated on their ED visit progress
  • View personalized wait times
  • Access facility maps and information
  • Share their visit with friends and family
  • See lab and imaging tests and receive education on the results
  • Submit a Service Request
  • Provide Staff Recognition
  • View their visit summary upon discharge or admittance

Impacts of Antimicrobial Resistance on Cancer Care

Join us Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 10 a.m. EDT for CDC’s AMR Exchange, Impacts of Antimicrobial Resistance on Cancer Care.

People receiving treatment for cancer are at a higher risk for infections. The growing global public health threat of antimicrobial resistance can make these infections harder — if not impossible — to treat.

Hear how CDC and partners are working to address antimicrobial resistance in cancer care, including improving infection prevention efforts in health care to limit cancer patient exposure to antimicrobial-resistant germs, and examining the connection between the health of the microbiome (the naturally occurring germs on and in our bodies) and the effectiveness of some cancer therapies.

Experts from CDC, the Union for International Cancer Control, MD Anderson Cancer Center, The Hospital for Sick Children, BD, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will talk about how partners are implementing antimicrobial resistance work in the U.S. and around the world.
